The Coming Out Starter Pack is a critique on omnipresent, societal heteronormativity and the frustrating, vulnerable aspects of being forced to come out of the closet. Users are intended to literally open the closet door and are greeted by collateral made by-and-for a queer audience. Included in the kit:

  • Mind-Your-Business Cards: for the nosy straight person who wants to “ask you a question.”

  • Announcement Cards: to make an antiquated, ritualistic announcement with an outdated means of sending information.

  • Coming Out Template Sheets: because there’s no /write/ way to come out! And honey, you’re gonna be doing it again and again. Thank goodness there’s multiple sheets!

  • Come Out & Play Teddy: he’ll become your new GBF and your favorite accessory!

  • Glitter: for throwing when entering and exiting rooms.

The project was also accompanied by a communal diary for queer people to express their coming out stories. Prompted to do so either by name or anonymously, the diary links the act of coming out–an inherently secretive act–with the idea of a diary, making something that is usually a solo item a communal, exhibitive piece.
